Evaluation of the internal juguler vein patency in functional neck dissection

Abstract
In this study, the evaluation of internal juguler vein potency in the late postoperative period after functional neck dissection by color Doppler ultrasonography was aimed. Twenty-eight patients with primary head and neck cancer who underwent 39 functional neck dissections were evaluated. Color Doppler ultrasonographic examination was performed after 3 to 33 months (average, 24 months). In 3 patients who undervent total larengectomy, pharyngocutaneus fistulas were noted because of postoperative wound infection. Seventeen patients were treated with radiotherapy postoperatively. In 36 (92%) internal juguler veins. The flow rate and diameter were found normal. In only 3 (8%) internal juguler veins, minimal reduction of the flow rate and diameter were found. Our results Indicate that functional neck dissection does not in fluence internal juguler vein potency in the late postoperative period.

Bu çalışmada, fonksiyonel boyun diseksiyonu (FBD) sonrası geç postoperatif dönemde, internal juguler ven (IJV) açıklığının renkli Doppler ultrasonografi (USG) ile değerlendirilmesi amaçlandı. Otuz dokuz fonksiyonel boyun diseksiyonu yapılan, primer baş-boyun kanseri tanısı olan 28 hasta değerlendirildi. Renkli doppler ultrasonografik muayene-Postoperatif 3-33 ay (ortalama, 24 ay) sonra yapıldı. Total larenjektomi yapılan 3 hastada, postoperatif yara enfeksiyon nedeniyle faringo kutanöz fistül gözlendi. Postoperatif 17 hastaya radyoterapi uygulandı.Otuz altı (%92) internal juguler venin, akım hızı ve çapı normal bulundu. Sadece 3 (%8) internal juguler venin, akım hızı ve çapında minimal azalma saptandı. Bulgularımız, Fonksiyonel boyun diseksiyonunun geç postoperatif dönemde, IJV açıklığını etkilemediğini göstermektedir.
