A College Student Profile: A Conceptual Analysis and Some Empirical Findings on Turkey

Üniversite Öğrenci Profili: Kavramsal Bir Çözümleme ve Türkiye'ye İlişkin Bazı Ampirik Bulgular

Abstract

Global trend into the massification. of higher education has forced higher education systems into organizational and functional variety. This situation has resulted in the raise of the variety and diversity of student profile in every university as well as among universities. Because of this reason, the importance and theoretical and practical value of student profile research have increased. The main aim of the article is to contribute to the debate in the literature related to current college-student profile. The definition, meaning, and importance of the concept of student profile, and the theoretical debate on the epistemological and methodological foundation of drawing student profile have been covered in the first section of the article. In the second section, the student profile of Higher Education System in Turkey has been described from the aspects of social and demographics variables.

Özet

Yüksek öğretimin kitleselleşmesi yönündeki küresel eğilim, yüksek öğretim sistemlerini kurumsal ve işlevsel çesidiliğe zorlamıştır. Bu olgu, gerek üniversiteler arasındaki gerekse her bir üniversite içindeki öğrenci profillerinin de giderek çeşitlenmesini ve farklılaşmasını beraberinde getirmiştir. Dolayısıyla bu makalede çerçevesi çizilmeye çalışılan türden öğrenci profili araştırmalarının kuramsal ve pratik değeri ve önemi artmıştır. Bu makalenin temel amacı, üniversite öğrenci profiline ilişkin kuramsal ve ampirik bilgi eksikliğini gidermeye yönelik katkı sunmaktır. Makalenin birinci bölümünde, öğrenci profili kavramının tanımı, anlamı ve önemi ile öğrenci profili çizmenin kimi epistemolojik ve metodolojik temellerine ilişkin kuramsal bir tartışmaya yer verilmiştir. Makalenin izleyen bölümlerinde ise Türkiye yüksek öğretiminin öğrenci profili sosyodemografik boyutlarıyla resmedilmeye çalışılmıştır.
