Predictors of the elementary school proficiency exams and issues of equality in educational facilities

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to determine whether school/student, classroom/student, teacher/student ratio, and the Human Development Index (I.G.E.) rates by province predict a province’s total 6th and 7th grade Ele- mentary School Proficiency Exam (SBS) scores. To determine the relationships between the province’s total 6th and 7th grade SBS scores and the predictor variables (school/student ratio by province; classroom/student ratio by province; teacher/student ratio by province; I.G.E. rates by province), multiple regression analysis was performed. The results show that in the order of importance; I.G.E. rates by province, teacher/student ratio by pro- vince, school/student ratio by province, and classroom/student ratio by province are able to predict province’s total 6th and 7th grade SBS scores.

Özet

Bu araştırma, Türkiye'deki illerin okul, derslik, öğretmen başına düşen öğrenci sayıları ve İnsani Gelişmişlik Endeksleri (İ.G.E.) değişkenlerinin 6. ve 7. sınıf Seviye Belirleme Sınavı (SBS) genel il toplam doğru cevap yüzdelerinin anlamlı birer yordayıcısı olup olmadığını saptamayı amaçlamaktadır. İllerin okul, öğrenci ve derslik başına düşen öğrenci sayıları, İ.G.E. değişkenlerinin birlikte 6. ve 7. sınıf SBS il genel sınav sonuçlarının anlamlı birer yordayıcısı olup olmadığını saptamak amacıyla Çoklu Doğrusal Regresyon analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Araştırma, illerin SBS'deki başarılarını yordayan en anlamlı belirleyicilerin sırasıyla illerin İnsani Gelişmişlik Endeks değerleri, öğretmene düşen öğrenci sayısı, okula düşen öğrenci sayısı ve dersliğe düşen öğrenci sayısı olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
