The effect of the values education programme on 5.5-6 year old childrens social development: social skills, psycho-social development and social problem solving skills

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the Values Education Programme (developed for pre-school children) on the childrens social skills, psycho-social development, and social problem solving skills. The sample group consisted of 66 children (33 experimental group, 33 control group) attending pre-school. The Values Education Programme was applied in the experimental group of 33 students, with session time lasting 30 minutes in each 11 week session. In this research the following was used in order to measure the dependent variables: Family Registration Form, Values Education Programme Assessment Interview developed by the researcher, Social Skills Evaluation Scale, Psycho-social Behaviour Scale for Pre-school Children (developed by the Turkish Psychology Association Committee on Pre-school), and the Wally Child Social ProblemSolving Detective Game Test. In the analysis process, descriptive statistics, t-test for independent groups, paired- samples t-test, frequencies, descriptive statistics, and typology analysis techniques were used. At the end of the values education programme, it was seen that the experimental groups social skills, psycho-social development, and social problem solving skills points rose from the pre-test towards the post-test and, that it increased at a significant pace compared to the control groups social skills, psycho-social development and social problem solving skills points. Also, after completing the three month training programme, it was found that there were no significant differences between the points of the experimental groups and control groups pre-test retention test. Conversely, parents indicate that values education program increased childrens appropriate behaviours and decreased undesired the behaviours of children.

Bu araştırmanın amacı okul öncesi dönem çocukları için geliştirilmiş olan değerler eğitimi programının çocukların sosyal beceri, psiko-sosyal gelişim ve sosyal problem çözme becerilerine etkisini incelemektir. Araştırma nın örneklemini okul öncesi eğitim kurumuna devam eden 5,5- 6 yaş arasında 66 (33 deney grubu, 33 kontrol grubu) çocuk oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma deneme modellerinden yarı deneysel modelde planlanmıştır. Deney grubundaki çocuklara, 11 hafta 33 oturum her bir oturum 30 dakika süren Değerler Eğitimi Programı uygulanmıştır. Araştırmada, Aile Katılım Formu, Değerler Eğitimi Programını Değerlendirme Görüşme Formu, Sosyal Becerileri Değerlendirme Ölçeği, Okul Öncesi Çocuklar İçin Psiko-Sosyal Davranışlar Ölçeği ve Wally Çocuk Sosyal Problem Çözme Dedektif Oyun Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistikler, bağımsız gruplar için t testi ve eşleştirilmiş iki grup t testi teknikleri ile yapılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda Değerler Eğitimi Programına katılan çocukların sosyal beceri, psiko-sosyal gelişim ve sosyal problem çözme becerileri puan ortalamalarının eğitim programına katılmayan çocukların puan ortalamalarından anlamlı düzeyde yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. Deney grubundaki çocukların ön test ve son test puanları arasında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmuştur. Eğitim programının bitiminden üç ay sonra deney grubuna yapılan ölçüm sonucunda son test ve kalıcılık ölçüm puan ortalamaları arasında anlamlı bir farklılık tespit edilmemiştir. Aileler değerler eğitimi programı nından sonra çocuklarında istendik davranışların arttığını, istenmedik davranışların azaldığını belirtmişlerdir
