Evaluation of psychogenic stress by Beck Depression Inventory of mutational falsetto patients

Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the psychological stress and the depressive mood of mutational falsetto patients with Beck Depression Inventory as an easy and effective scale.Patients and Methods: A total of 25 male patients (mean age 23.2 years; range 20 to 37 years), who were referred to our clinic with mutational falsetto or were diagnosed as so at our clinic between April 2012 and January 2015, were included in the study. Patients were retrospectively evaluated according to their Voice Handicap Index (VHI), multidimensional voice program analysis (MDVP) and Beck Depression Inventory results. A total of 25 male individuals (mean age 28.9 years; range 25 to 43 years) were randomly selected as control group from the other patients who were admitted to the psychiatric clinic for depressive complaints and evaluated by the Beck Depression Inventory. The subjective responses and scale scores of the depression scales were compared between the mutational falsetto group and the control group.Results: The mean frequency (F0) of the mutational falsetto patients was 210.05 Hz and the F0 interval was 178-262 Hz. In addition, the average VHI score applied to this group was 65.8. According to Beck depression survey results; the average of the survey results of the patients was 24.9±1.1 in the first group, and 16.1±0.7 in the second group. We found a statistically significant difference between the two groups according to the analysis of the survey results (p=0.018).Conclusion: This study shows that mutational falsetto can cause a great effect on the patients' moods. Patients may experience more social isolation and depressive mood because of the lack of psychiatric evaluation and the inability to determine the treatment goals appropriately.

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, mutasyonel falsetto hastalarının psikolojik stres ve depresif ruh halleri basit ve etkili bir ölçek olan Beck Depresyon Ölçeği ile değerlendirildi.Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Çalışmaya Nisan 2012 - Ocak 2015 tarihleri arasında mutasyonel falsetto tanısı ile kliniğimize sevk edilen veya kliniğimizde mutasyonel falsetto tanısı konan toplam 25 erkek hasta (ort. yaş 23.2 yıl; dağılım 20-37 yıl) dahil edildi. Hastalar; Ses Handikap Endeksi (VHI), çok boyutlu ses programı analizi (MDVP) ve Beck Depresyon Ölçeği sonuçları açısından geriye dönük olarak değerlendirildi. Çalışmada kontrol grubu olarak toplam 25 erkek birey (ort. yaş 28.9 yıl; dağılım 25-43 yıl) depresif yakınmalar için psikiyatri polikliniğine başvuran ve Beck Depresyon Ölçeği ile değerlendirilen diğer hastalar arasından rastgele seçildi. Depresyon ölçeklerinin öznel yanıtları ve ölçek puanları mutasyonel falsetto grubu ve kontrol grubu arasında karşılaştırıldı.Bulgular: Mutasyonel falsetto hastalarının ortalama frekansı (F0) 210.05 Hz ve F0 aralığı 178-262 Hz idi. Buna ek olarak, bu gruba uygulanan ortalama VHI skorları 65.8 idi. Beck depresyon anket sonuçlarına göre; hastaların anket sonuçlarının ortalaması birinci grupta 24.9±1.1, ikinci grupta 16.1±0.7 idi. Anket sonuçlarının analizine göre iki grup arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark bulundu (p=0.018).Sonuç: Bu çalışma, mutasyonel falsettonun, hastaların duygudurumları üzerinde büyük bir etkiye neden olabileceğini göstermiştir. Psikiyatrik değerlendirmenin eksikliği ve tedavi hedeflerinin uygun belirlenememesinden dolayı, hastalar daha fazla sosyal izolasyon ve depresif ruh hali yaşayabilirler.
