EPISTEMOLOGICAL BASIS OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

Abstract

The nature of epistemological basis of social sciences is a subject of discussion since 19th century during which they appeared for the first time. Because various movements have different epistemological approaches on the basis of different principles. It is for this reason that not only the value of social sciences but also the boundaries between them is under a cloud of suspicion. In this respect, considering the epistemological basis of social sciences is of vital importance. Besides, the increasing obscurity and chaos on this issue nowadays makes the importance of this attempt more serious. In this study, firstly the epistemological approach which occurs in accordance with the modern natural science will be discussed. Then, the interpretive tradition which emerges through criticizing the first approach will be examined. Finally, the contemporary situation of this issue will be described. Based upon this background, some suggestions will be offered about epistemological basis of contemporary social sciences

Özet

Sosyal bilimlerin epistemolojik temellerinin mahiyeti, ortaya çıktıkları 19. yüzyıldan beri tartışma konusu olmuştur. Zira çeşitli akım ve gelenekler farklı ilkelerden yola çıkarak, farklı epistemolojik yaklaşımlar sergilemişlerdir. Bu durum hem sosyal bilimlerin itibarını tartışma konusu yapmış hem de bu başlık altında toplanan disiplinlerin sınırlarının belirlenmesini zorlaştırmıştır. Bu bakımdan sosyal bilimlerin epistemolojik temelleri üzerine düşünmek büyük önem taşımaktadır. Günümüzde konuyla ilgili yaşanan belirsizlik ve karmaşa da meselenin ciddiyetini artırmaktadır. Bu çalışmada ise önce modern doğa biliminin ilkeleri doğrultusunda benimsenen epistemolojik yaklaşım tartışılacak, ardından bu yaklaşımı eleştirerek ortaya çıkan yorumlayıcı gelenek incelenecek, son olarak da çağımızdaki durum resmedilecektir. Bu arka plana dayanarak, sosyal bilimlerin epistemolojik temellerini hangi ilkeler üzerinde oluşturmaları gerektiği konusunda bazı öneriler getirilmeye çalışılacaktır
