THE LOGIC PERCEPTIONS OF SALIH ZEKI AND ALI SEDAD

Abstract

The extraordinary developments that took place in the field of mathematics in the 19th century, reveal the belief that mathematics has a grounding problem. Mathematicians have tried various methods to re-ground mathematics. One of these is the idea of re-ground mathematics with the propositions of logic. Mathematicians such as Schröder, Frege, Peano, Russell, Hilbert, Whitehaed are representatives of this trend. In the same century, logicists such as De Morgan, Boole and Jevons in England developed mathematical logic by re-expressing logic with the language of mathematics as an alternative to the Aristotelian logic. The aim of this article is the reﬂections of these two opposite concepts emerging in the field of mathematics and logic to the Ottoman Philosophers. For this purpose, the books of Ali Sedad and Salih Zeki, two important Turkish Philosopher of the period, were analyzed which are Mizanü’l-Ukûl fi’l-Mantık ve’l-Usûl and Mizân-ı Tefekkür respectively. It was determined that Ali Sedad was the first person to inform the Ottoman science world about Mathematical Logic, also called Boole Algebra, but he did not participate in the idea of mathematical logic. It was considered as Salih Zeki opposed idea of reduction of mathematics to logic, but he defended the idea of Mathematical logic which was put forward by English logician.

Özet

19. yüzyılda matematik alanında meydana gelen olağan üstü gelişmeler, mate- matiğin bir temellendirme sorunu olduğu düşüncesini ortaya çıkarmıştır. Mate- matikçiler matematiği yeniden temellendirmek için çeşitli yöntemler denemiş- lerdir. Bunlardan biri matematiği mantığın önermeleri ile yeniden temellendirme düşüncesidir. Schröder, Frege, Peano, Russell, Hilbert, Whitehaed gibi matema- tikçiler bu akımın temsilcileridir. Aynı yüzyılda İngiltere’de De Morgan, Boole ve Jevons gibi mantıkçılar ise mantığı matematiğin diliyle yeniden ifade ederek, Aristoteles mantığına alternatif olarak matematik mantığı geliştirmişlerdir. Ma- tematik ve mantık alanında ortaya çıkan bu iki zıt anlayışın Osmanlı mütefekkir- lerine yansıması bu makalenin konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Bu amaçla dönemin iki önemli Türk düşünürü olan Ali Sedad’ın Mizanü’l-Ukûl fi’l-Mantık ve’l-Usûl ve Salih Zeki’nin Mizân-ı Tefekkür isimli eserleri incelenmiştir. Ali Sedad’ın Boole Cebiri olarak da isimlendirilen matematik mantıktan Osmanlı bilim dün- yasını ilk haberdar eden kişi olduğu, fakat matematik mantık düşüncesine katıl- madığı tespit edilmiştir. Salih Zeki’nin ise matematiğin mantığa indirgenmesi düşüncesine karşı çıktığı, fakat İngiliz mantıkçılarının ortaya attıkları matematik mantık düşüncesini savunduğu görülmüştür.
