Abstract
People employed metaphors to convey subtle meanings throughout the history of thought. On the other hand, categorically speaking, the idea of balance between reason and intuition struggled mankind from the beginning of history. One metaphor as the story of the Painting Contest indicates the necessity of a kind of balance between reason and intuition, and to say it in terms of the Islamic studies tradition, between zahirî 'ilm and batınî 'ilm. In this essay, with a special focus on sufi literature since it seems unique in its use of metaphorical utterances, metaphors told mainly in an ontological context are taken into account, then, the ones told mainly in an epistemological context are presented and dealt with. The essay draws special attention and focuses on the story of the Painting Contest as a mirror metaphor that points out the state of the perfect combination between reason and intuition. Moreover, this metaphor is dealt with in its four versions as they found were in Ghazali's Ihya, Rumi's Mathnawi, Ibn Khaldun's Shifâu's-Sâil and Orhan Pamuk's Kara Kitap (The Black Book).
