Abstract

In Turkish philosophical literature, excepting a few outstanding philosophers, Thomas Kuhn is still being accused of defending an irrationalist picture of scientific activity or theory choice, or of severely criticizing its methodology and findings. Even, it is said that he undermines the importance of science and the reliability of its capacity to produce reliable knowledge. This paper argues that the claim that Kuhnian picture of science is irrationalistic is profoundly mistaken for the following reasons: (i) For Kuhn, science is an intrinsically rationalistic activity, (ii) He assumes that there are and should be good and even maybe compelling reasons, for at least some individual scientists, for theory choice, (iii) What he argues against is the thesis which stipulates that "the possibility and existence of logically and/or experimentally (also, universally) compelling arguments for theory choice is a prerequisite" for the existence of scientific rationality.
