Abstract
In moral philosophy, Hume comes to mind as one of the most important, original philosophers. The most characteristic feature of his moral philosophy is that it is sentimentalist. For Hume reveals the moral distinctions, for example good and evil, virtue and vice only with passions, emotions, and feelings. Those who set the human being in motion, urge them to action, and thus set the goals are passions. Reason, on the other hand, acts as a “mean” to reach the aims that are determined by the passions. For Hume moral philosophy is about values and reason is about the facts, it is not possible for us to deal with values through facts. For this reason, he states that virtue is a matter of feeling that will be caught in the heart. Hume points out that he reaches this result through experiment like a scientist. In his investigation of understanding, he extends habit which he has identified with the principles of mind, belief to other selves step by step. He thinks that our life is basically based on experience and experience-related habits, beliefs. This idea is at the center of Hume’s Treatise which includes three parts, it is the joint interest of all three parts. Therefore about the third book where Hume argues morality, he says that it can be read independently, but he proceeds in connection with the first two books. Consequently, in this article through Treatise which we can call a product of genius, we will consider Hume’s moral teaching.
