Abstract

As given utterance in Levinas’s early philosophical works, a principal trait of thephilosophyofethicshasbeenadesiretopresentitselfassomethingseparate from the field of ontology. The pretense of escaping from thenotion of being in Levinas’s philosophy plays a central role in the recognition of the Other, which is the principal theme of ethics. Our aim here is to examine the pretense of escaping from being and its categories with the aid of some basic concepts from Levinasian ethical thought, via a discussion concerning ontology and meontology. In addition, this study attempts to illustrate the diffi culty inherent in any attempt to escape from the notion of being by revealing the general thought process of Levinasian philosophy of ethics. If it is not the case that the eschewal of being can be achieved in non-being as Levinas claims—that is to say if ethics still must manifest without falling itself into non-being—then ethics seems to be tied to its own particular notion of being. As a further point of interest, we hope that the present article’s treatment of this topic will also serve as an interrogation of the limits of ethical thought.

Özet

Emmanuel Levinas felsefesinde erken dönem eserlerden itibaren dile getirildiği gibi ontolojiden çıkış isteği, sunmak istediği etik felsefesinin en önemli özel- liği olmuştur. Levinas felsefesinde varlık düşüncesinden çıkma iddiası, etiğin önemli teması olan başkalığın anlaşılmasında merkezi rol oynar. Bizim çalış- mamız, Levinasçı etik düşüncesinin bazı temel kavramları aracılığıyla, varlık- tan ve onun kategorilerinden çıkma iddiasını, ontoloji ve meontoloji tartışması üzerinden ele almaya çalışmaktadır. Bu çalışma aynı zamanda Levinasçı etik felsefesinin genel bir güzergâhını göstermeye çalışarak varlık düşüncesinden çıkma iddiasının zorluklarını göstermeyi denemektedir. Varlık düşüncesinden çıkma, eğer Levinas’ın söylediği gibi yokluğa varmak değilse, yani etik ken- disini yokluğa düşmeden göstermek zorunda kalmış ise, etik kendisini belli bir varlık düşüncesine bağlamış gözükmektedir. İşte bu meseleyi sunmayı deneyen mevcut makalemiz aynı zamanda etik düşüncesinin sınırları hakkında genel bir sorgulama niyeti taşımaktadır.
