Abstract
In the Aristotelian system of thought, human nature has a tendency to thinking/ speaking (zoon logikon) and at the same time social/political (zoon politikon) life. Again, human beings are naturally inclined to be virtuous as well as actions that avoid pain, seeking pleasure. Intellectual virtues are learned through educa- tion, moral virtues are acquired through habituation. For the theoretical life to which mankind is naturally directed to as the most ultimate goal, human being must be educated in order to actualize intellectual virtues for his life and directed to good/virtuous by habit (nurture). In order to be able to do this education and training, there is a need for leisure time and organized police life that will lead to this leisure time. In other words, inadequacy of individual render necessary the division of labor that require living together. Leisure time is filled with the tra- ining necessary to achieve the theoretical thinking activity of the human being. While Aristotle combines the view of pleasure-pain and virtue, he makes it ne- cessary to be virtuous to obtain living well and eudaimonia. According to Aris- totle, it can not be virtuous without having a virtuous character. The habit plays a dominant role in developing the character and therefore in becoming virtuous. Neither virtues are natural capacities like senses nor human beings are naturally virtuous. What Aristotle regards as a natural phenomenon is that a person can become virtuous by virtue of habit. Habit comes from an experience (nurture) based on the way of growing from childhood. Since the virtues do not appear by virtue of nature of man, the habit does not activate a natural capacity. Human beings can ‘obtain’ virtues naturally that arise neither by nature nor contrary to nature and they can make perfect them through habit. So, man is not virtuous naturally, but becomes virtuous through habit; because it can only reach his full potential and fulfill his function under nurture. Then the path to the virtue pas- ses through habit. In this article, the notion of the human being that Aristotle emphasized in external contingent conditions more than inner necessary nature, namely the police and nurture, arranged taking the center on the concept of habit is queried which is in the the conception of human nature interpreted on the basis of his work on Nicomachean Ethics, Politics and On The Soul.
Öyleyse erde- me giden yol alışkanlıktan geçmektedir. Bu makalede Nikomakhos’a Etik, Po- litika ve Ruh Üzerine eserleri temelinde yorumlanan insan doğası kavrayışında, vurgusunu içsel zorunlu doğadan ziyade dışsal olumsal koşullara, yani polise ve terbiyeye yapan Aristoteles’in alışkanlık kavramını merkeze alarak ördüğü insan oluş mefhumu sorgulanır.
