Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to assess the incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the head and neck treated by transoral robotic surgery (TORS).Patients and Methods: Between December 2009 and March 2013, a total of 30 patients with larynx (n=24), oral cavity and oropharyngeal SCC (n=6) (28 males, 2 females; mean age 66.4±13.5 years; range 41 to 77 years) who had been treated by TORS at our clinic were included in this study. The paraffin blocks of the pathological specimens taken from the patients were immunohistochemically stained with appropriate paint for specific HPV serotypes and were examined by light microscopy. The staining results were regarded as positive and negative. Results: No staining was detected in any of the patients included in this study to make us think of the presence of HPV.Conclusion: Future studies with larger number of patients should be done to explore the presence and the role of HPV in the etiology of the SCC of the head and neck.

Özet

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, baş boyun yassı hücreli karsinom (YHK) tanısı ile transoral robotik cerrahi (TORC) uygulanan hastalarda human papilloma virüs (HPV) insidansı araştırıldı.Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Aralık 2009 - Mart 2013 tarihleri arasında larenks (n=24), oral kavite ve orofarengeal YHK (n=6) tanısıyla kliniğimizde TORC uygulanan toplam 30 hasta (28 erkek, 2 kadın; ort. yaş 66.4±13.5 yıl; dağılım 41-77 yıl) çalışmaya dahil edildi. Hastalardan alınan patolojik örneklerin parafin blokları immünohistokimyasal yöntemlerle HPV serotiplerine uygun spesifik boyalar kullanarak ışık mikroskopisi ile incelendi. Boyama sonuçları pozitif ve negatif olarak gözlendi.Bulgular: Bu çalışmaya dahil edilen hastalarda HPV varlığını düşündürecek bir boyama saptanmadı.Sonuç: Daha fazla hastanın dahil edildiği gelecek çalışmalarda HPV'nin varlığı ve baş boyun YHK'nin etyolojideki rolü araştırılmalıdır.
