Evaluation of the psychological component in patients with chronic pharyngitis

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the psychological dimension in patients with chronic pharyngitis. Patients and Methods: Fifty-three patients with chronic pharyngitis were administered a battery of standardized psychological tests from Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, including hypochondria, depression, and hysteria, as well as three control tests including L, F, K. Results: Conversion V profile was observed as the upper 5% confidence limit was approached both in male and female patients. Fluctuations in the psychological components occurred as the disease duration increased and pathologic test scores were found inversely related to the education levels. Conclusion: Patients with chronic pharyngitis should be evaluated carefully especially for hypochondria and those whose symptoms persist for a long time (8-10 years) may need psychiatric help.
Özet
Amaç: Kronik farenjitli hastalarda psikolojik boyutu değerlendirmek.Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Kronik farenjit tanısı konan 53 hastaya Türk standardizasyonu yapılmış Minnesota Çok Yönlü Kişilik Envanteri'nde bulunan hipokondri (Hs), depresyon (D) ve histeri (Hy) klinik alt testleri ve L,F,K olarak adlandırılan test alma tutumlarını değerlendiren testler uygulandı. Bulgular: Hem kadın hem de erkek hastalarda özellikle üst %5 güven sınırına yaklaştıkça konversiyon V profili oluştuğu görüldü. Hastalık süresi uzadıkça psikolojik komponentlerde dalgalanmalar saptandı; testlerdeki patolojik puanların eğitim durumu ile ters orantılı olduğu gözlendi. Sonuç: Kronik farenjitli hastaların özellikle hipokondri açısından dikkatli değerlendirilmeleri gerekir; uzun süreli şikayetleri (8-10 yıl) olanların psikiyatrik desteğe gereksinimi olabilir.
