A RESEARCH ON THE FINANCIAL EFFECTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON TOURISM AND AIRLINES SECTORS

COVID-19 PANDEMİSİNİN TURİZM VE HAVAYOLU SEKTÖRLERİNE MALİ ETKİLERİ ÜZERİNE BİR ARAŞTIRMA

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has directly affected the social and economic structure in our country as well as all over the world. Among the affected sectors, tourism and transportation sectors are at the top. In the study, a comparison was made on the financial data of a total of 15 companies engaged in listed tourism and airline transport activities in Borsa Istanbul, based on the rates that emerged before and after Covid-19. In the research, which included data for the first three quarters of 2020 and all quarters of 2018-2019, current rate, rate of change in sales, operating profit margin, net profit margin, return on equity and financial leverage ratios were analyzed and compared by calculating industry averages. In addition, hypotheses about whether there was a significant difference between periods with the Covid-19 effect based on ratios were tested with a nonparametric Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. According to the statistical test results, statistically significant differences were found in the sales change, main operating profit margin and self-interest profitability rates in both six and nine months results and in net profit margin only in six months results compared to the pre-Covid-19 period. While the findings reveal the financial fragility of the enterprises included in the study, the contribution of the tourism and airline transportation sectors to employment, the country’s economy and its social effects are remarkable.

Özet

Covid-19 pandemisi tüm dünyada olduğu gibi ülkemizde de sosyal ve ekonomikyapıyı doğrudan etkilemiştir. Etkilenen sektörlerin içerisinde ilk sıralarda turizmve ulaştırma sektörleri gelmektedir. Araştırmada Türkiye’de Borsa İstanbul’dakote turizm ve havayolu taşımacılığı faaliyeti gerçekleştiren toplam 15 işletmeninmali verileri üzerinden Covid-19 öncesi ve sonrası dönemlerde ortaya çıkan malioranlar üzerinden bir karşılaştırma yapılmıştır. 2020 ilk üç çeyrek verileri ve 2018-2019 tüm çeyrek dönemlerinin dâhil edildiği araştırmada cari oran, satışlardakideğişim oranı, esas faaliyet kâr marjı, net kâr marjı, özsermaye kârlılığı ve finansalkaldıraç oranları ile analiz gerçekleştirilmiştir ve sektör ortalamaları hesaplanarakkarşılaştırma yapılmıştır. Ayrıca oranlar temel alınarak Covid-19 etkisi iledönemlerarasında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunup bulunmadığına dair oluşturulanhipotezler parametrik olmayan Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıra testi ile sınanmıştır. Yapılanistatistik test sonuçlarına göre satışlardaki değişim, esas faaliyet kâr marjı veözsermaye kârlılığı oranlarında hem altı hem de dokuz aylık sonuçlarda, net kârmarjında ise sadece altı aylık sonuçlarda Covid-19 öncesi döneme göre istatistikselolarak anlamlı farklılıklar tespit edilmiştir. Bulgular araştırmaya dâhil edilenişletmelerin finansal kırılganlığını ortaya koyarken, turizm ve havayolu ulaştırmasektörlerinin istihdama, ülke ekonomisine katkısı ve sosyal etkileri yönündendikkat çekmektedir.
