Abstract

Peritoneal fluids of 84 patients receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and of 63 patients admitted for the determination of ascitic etiology underwent bacteriological examination. Bacterial growth was documented in the cultures of 39 patients (26.6%), whereas as the remaining cultures (73.4%) remained sterile. Two patients exhibited more than one bacterial growth. Isolated patterns included coagulase-negative staphylococci (n=12), coagulase-positive staphylococci (n=6), E. coli (n=4), Pseudomonas spp. (n=3), alpha-hemolytic streptococcus (n=2), Acinetobacter spp. (n=l), Erwinia spp. (n=l), Enterobacter spp. (n=l), and group D (n=l) and group G (n=l) streptococci. Growth of Candida spp. was observed in nine patients.
