Abstract
Objectives: We compared induction and recovery periods and the hemodynamic effects of halothane and sevoflurane. Patients and Methods: Forty children (ASA I, age range 4-13 years) undergoing tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy were randomly divided into two groups. Following premedication with 0.5 mg/kg midazolam 30 minutes preoperatively, and with 3.5 L/ min O2 and 3.5 L/min NO2, one group was assigned to halothane (0.5% with increasing concentrations at every 3-4 breaths), while the other to sevoflurane (1.5% with increments of 1 % at every 3-5 breaths). Results: Induction, extubation, and recovery periods in the halothane group were 2.31±0.31, 9.11±3.0, and 43.24±20.37 minutes, respectively. Significantly shorter periods were observed with sevoflurane, being 1.51±0.20, 7.11±2.0, and 19.27±7.00 minutes, respectively. No significant differences were found with respect to pulse rates and mean arterial pressures. Conclusion: It was observed that sevoflurane was a superior analgesic agent with earlier recovery duration and fewer side effects.
