Abstract

Cystic f ibrosis was diagnosed in a 3.5-month-old infant presenting with chronic salt depletion, hypoelectrolytemia, metabolic alkalosis and failure to thrive without malabsorption. After replacement of the salt deficit, the metabolic abnormalites resolved and weight gain was rapid. The recognition of this syndrome in patients with cystic fibrosis bears great importance because it can manifest itself as the primary reason for hospital admission and can be life-threatening unless treated.
