Abstract
Yahyâ Hilmî Efendi, considered among the important calligraphers of his time in calligraphy, was a fantastically tremendous calligrapher, especially in thuluth and naskh. Because of his interest in islamic sciences and calligraphy at an early age, he took thuluthnaskh lessons from teachers such as Mehmed Hashim (d. 1261/1845), Khalil Zuhdi (d. 1280-1290/1863-1874) and Huseyin Lütfî (d. 1280-1290/1863-1874). Although he cannot give weight to calligraphy due to his official position in Bab-ı Seraskeri, where he started at the age of fifteen and spent most of his life, he is mentioned in Ottoman calligraphy after Kazasker Mustafa Izzet Efendi (d. 1293/1876) and Mehmed Shevki Efendi (d. 1304/1887), who were among the most famous calligraphers of the period with their sulus and nesih writings. The fact that Sheikh Hamdullah (d. 926/1520) started writing and completed the Mushaf-i-Sharif in the same style 350 years later and again wrote Mushafi-Sharif 26 days in Ramadan shows how talented Yahyâ Hilmî Efendi is in fast writing and naskh writing. He has revealed many works with thuluth-naskh writings bearing the style of Mustafa Râkım (d. 1241/1826). He trained valuable students from each other until the end of his life, and those who did not have students participated as certifiers in their ijazetnames.
