Wound management using honey inveterinary practice

Abstract

Honey which is natural product of bees has been used in the management of wound healing since ancient times. Honey has antibacterial effects. These effects due to pH, hydrogen peroxide content, osmotic effect, and a phytochemical constituent. Using honey in the wound management enhances healing and eliminates invading bacteria without the use of systemic antibacterial drugs. Honey also decreases inflammatory oedema. Consequently the use of honey can be an effecive and economical approach to managing large and infected wounds.

Arılar tarafından üretilen bal, çok eski zamanlardan bu yana yara sağaltımında kullanılmaktadır. Balın antibak-teriyel etkisi vardır ve bu etki balın pH'sı, içerdiği hidro-jen peroksit, osmotik etkisi ve içeriğinde bulunan fıto-kimyasal ajanlardan kaynaklanmaktadır. Yara sağaltı-mında bal kullanılması yara iyileşmesini sağlar ve siste-mik antibiyotik kullanımına gerek kalmadan bakterileri elemine eder. Bal yangısal ödemi de azaltır. Sonuç olarak geniş ve enfekte yaraların sağaltımında bal kullanılması etkili ve ekonomik bir yaklaşımdır.
