A Study on Mehmet Kaplan’s “Text Analysis Method”

Abstract

Mehmet Kaplan is one of the founding figures of the Turcology education in Turkey. The studies he conducted in the field represent an important stage in the development of this discipline. Kaplan’s text-oriented and objective approach, which argues that literary history should be shaped according to the data obtained from the texts in literature research by highlighting the text, distinguishes him from many other critics of the Republican Period who base their literary criticism mainly on subjective judgements and have an impressionist style. On the other hand, his efforts to develop an original method without excluding the theories of criticism that were put forward in the West in the 20th century, reflects his attempts to put literature research in Turkey into a more theoretical and systematic framework. In this article, the basic principles of the “text analysis method” which he tried to develop in the preface of his works, especially in Poetry Analysis, Poetry Analysis II and Story Analysis will be reviewed and the extent he adhered to them in his text analyses will be discussed.

Mehmet Kaplan, Türkiye’de Türkoloji eğitiminin kurucu isimlerinden biridir ve ortaya koyduğu çalışmalar bu disiplinin gelişim çizgisinde önemli bir aşamayı temsil etmektedir. Edebiyat araştırmalarında edebî metni öne çıkararak edebiyat tarihinin metinlerden elde edilecek verilere göre şekillendirilmesi gerektiğini savunan Kaplan’ın metin merkezli ve nesnelliğe önem veren yaklaşımı, cumhuriyet dönemi edebiyat eleştirisinde büyük ölçüde öznel yargılara dayanan ve izlenimci bir çizgide yer alan pek çok eleştirmenden ayrılır. Öte yandan çalışmalarında 20. yüzyılda Batı’da ortaya çıkan eleştiri kuramlarını dışlamadan orijinal bir yöntem geliştirmeye çalışması da onun Türkiye’de edebiyat araştırmalarını daha kuramsal ve sistematik bir çerçeveye oturtma çabasını yansıtır. Bu yazıda onun özellikle Şiir Tahlilleri, Şiir Tahlilleri II ve Hikâye Tahlilleri adlı çalışmalarının “Önsöz”lerinde geliştirmek istediği “metin tahlili metodu”nun temel prensipleri değerlendirilerek metin tahlillerinde bu prensiplere ne ölçüde uyduğu tartışılacaktır.
