The Determination of the Prevalence of Household Food Insecurity in a Region of Central Anatolia

Abstract

The aim of study is to determine the household food insecurity in children enrolled at a primary school in the Kırşehir province, the body mass indices of children and their statuses of experiencing some health problems. The population of the study consisted of 228 children who were enrolled at a primary school and their families. The data of the study were collected via an information form, the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale and Families with Children Food Accessibility Scale. The study revealed food insecurity among 64.7% of the families. Most families were determined to be unable to consume red meat and fish, almost all families were found to consume bread every day. It was observed that almost all children (91.9%) had the common cold in the last one year, approximately half got ill easily, experienced stomachache, weakness, attention deficit, diarrhea, headaches, and 39% were overweight/obese. As a result of the study, it was determined that food insecurity was prevalent among the families and the children experienced various health problems. In the light of these results, it is recommended to conduct studies that develop policies which increase the access of families to healthy food.

Özet

Araştırmanın amacı; Kırşehir il merkezinde bulunan bir ilkokulda okuyan çocuklarda hane halkı gıda güvencesizliğini, beden kütle indeksini ve bazı sağlık sorunlarını yaşama durumunu belirlemektir. Araştırmanın evrenini, Kırşehir il merkezinde bulunan bir ilkokulda okuyan 228 çocuk ve ailesi oluşturmuştur. Araştırmanın verileri; anket formu, hane halkında gıdaya erişebilirlik anketi ve çocuklu aileler gıdaya erişebilirlik anketi ile toplanmıştır. Araştırmada ailelerin %64,7’sinde gıda güvencesizliği vardır. Ailelerin çoğunun kırmızı et ve balığı hiç tüketmediği ve neredeyse tümünün her gün ekmek tükettiği belirlenmiştir. Çocukların neredeyse tamamının (%91,9) son bir yıl içinde soğuk algınlığı geçirdiği, yaklaşık yarısının çabuk hastalandığı, karın ağrısı yaşadığı, halsiz olduğu, dikkat eksikliği yaşadığı, diyare geçirdiği, baş ağrısı yaşadığı ve %39’unun aşırı kilolu/obez olduğu belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucunda; ailelerde gıda güvencesizliğinin yaygın olduğu ve çocukların çeşitli sağlık sorunları yaşadığı belirlenmiştir. Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda; sağlıklı gıdaya erişimi artıran politikaların geliştirildiği çalışmaların yapılması önerilir.
