Role of Children Playgrounds in an Urban Space Development: The Case of TRNC Yeni Kent, Gönyeli

Abstract
In this study the role of children playgrounds in development process of urban spaces is investigated. The research area, Yeni Kent Gönyeli region in TRNC is one of the important locations where urban development rate is considerably high which has been the main reason for choosing this area as the case for this study. Within this context it has been aimed to produce recommendations for new solution in order to transform existing children playgrounds, in accordance with user demands in Yeni Kent Gönyeli, into livable playgrounds. Accordingly, physical analysis and modality, Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) method has been used in the study area.The study has three phase’s literature survey, physical analysis & questionnaires and evaluations. The first phase was focused on literature studies. In the second phase dealt with the physical analysis within environmental context in order to evaluate existing playgrounds on the basis of internationally accepted design criteria. In the third stage, in order to unveil the opinions and expectations of the children who are the users of these grounds, based on POE method a questionnaire is prepared and a survey was carried in the case area. Finally recommendations for solutions are made in order to transform children playgrounds into livable and user friendly urban spaces within development process of Yeni Kent Gönyeli.
Özet
Bu çalışmada, kentsel mekânların gelişme sürecinde çocuk oyun alanlarının rolü incelenmiştir. Kentsel mekânların gelişim sürecinde çocuk oyun alanlarının rolünün incelenmesi amacıyla K.K.T.C’nin hızlı gelişen bölgelerinden biri olan Yeni Kent Gönyeli seçilmiştir. Bu çerçevede, Yeni Kent Gönyeli bölgesinde bulunan çocuk oyun alanlarının gereksinimlere uygun alanlara dönüştürülebilmesi için kullanıcıların talepleri doğrultusunda yeni çözüm önerileri üretilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, fiziksel analiz ve Kullanım Sonrası Değerlendirme Yöntemi (KSD) alan çalışmasında kullanılmıştır.Çalışma üç aşamalı olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Birinci aşamada literatür taraması yapılmıştır. İkinci aşamada fiziksel analizler, çevresel bağlamda mekânların dünyadaki çocuk oyun alanları tasarım kriterlerine göre incelenmiştir. Üçüncü aşamada ise Kullanım Sonrası Değerlendirme Yöntemine (KSD) uygun olarak geliştirilen anket çalışması, bu alanların kullanıcısı olan çocukların mekânlar hakkındaki düşünce ve beklentilerini ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla çalışma alanında uygulanmış ve değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, Yeni Kent Gönyeli bölgesinde konumlanan çocuk oyun alanlarının gelişim süreci içerisinde yaşanabilir, kullanıcı dostu kentsel mekânlara dönüşebilmesi amacıyla çözüm önerileri geliştirilmiştir.
