The effectiveness of shunt pumping test in evaluating the function of the ventriculoperitoneal shunts

Abstract

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt systems, possesses an important place in the treatment of hydrocephalus. In practical use, the pumping mechanism of this shunt systems is used as a criteria to follow- up the shunt function by neurosurgeons. In this study, we analysed 103 cases treated with ventriculoperitoneal (V-P) shunt for hydrocephalus between 1990 and 99 in our clinic. Our study has demonstrated that, the pumping character of the shunt has not been correlated with the clinical situation of the patients. We have concluded that, this examination (which is used by many neurosurgeon) is not an effective method in practical use.

Özet

Serebrospinal sivi (CSF) sant sistemleri hidrosefali tedavisinde önemli bir yer teskil etmektedir. Pratik uygulamada pek çok beyin cerrahi tarafindan bu sant sistemlerinin içerdigi pompa mekanizmasi, santin fonksiyonunu takip açisindan kriter olarak kullanilmaktadir. Bizim bu çalismamiz da klinigimizde 1990-1999 tarihleri arasinda hidrosefali tanisi ile ventriküloperitoneal (V-P) sant uygulanan 103 olgu incelendi. Bu çalismamiz neticesinde santin pompalama karakterlerinin, olgularin klinik durumlariyla uyumlu olmadigini tespit ettik. Bu verilerin isiginda pratik uygulamada birçok beyin cerrahinin basvurdugu bu muayene yönteminin efektif bir metod olmadigi irdelendi.
