Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the bi¬ochemical and histological effects of alcohol on va¬rious organs of the rats. The study was carried out on three groups of rats as fallows: Control group, alcohol fed group and pair - fed group. The alcohol group was fed for 12 days with a diet containing 4.5glkglday ethyl alcohol. The pair fed group was given glucose (7.88 glkglgün) which calory level was equal to the calory level of alcohol given to the second group. At the end of the feeding period, fas¬ting serum glucose, triglycerid, phospholipid and free fatty acid levels were measured in the serum of those three groups. The postmortal histological changes in liver, kidneys, stomach, spleen and lung were examined by light microscopy. Triglycerid, phospholipid and free faty acid levels of alcohol group were higher than those of control and pair -fed group. Very common high mitotic activity (in the' early pro-phase) in the hepatocytes at the peripheral of the classical lobules, semidiffuse hemorrhagies in the glomerules and erythrocytes infiltrated into the intertubuler area were seen at the light microscopic examination of the liver and kidney specimens of al¬cohol given group. It was concluded that the level of triglycerid, phospholipid and free fatty acid increase in serum due to alcohol intake.. It is supposed that the increase is not related with alcohol calory but it may be related with general effect of alcohol on me¬tabolic activity of human body.
