Abstract
Objective: Main goal of our study is to evaluate the influence of acne vulgaris on anxiety and depression. Methods: Total amount of 100 patients with acne vulgaris (63 women, 37 men) between 14-30 years old (aver-age 20.81 years) were enrolled in this study. None of the patients had ever received anti-acne therapy. Also, a control group was consisted of 28 individuals (19 women, 9 men) without acne vulgaris. Severity of acne was clas-sified according to Global Acne Grading System (GAGS). Hospital Anxiety and Depression Test (HAD) was applied to patients and control group. Patients were admitted to a six month therapy and invited for one month follow-ups. Control group did not receive any medical therapy during the follow-up period. At the end of sixth month, HAD was applied to the subjects to compare anxiety and depression status between patients and control group. Results: Anxiety and depression in patients were significantly decreased after the end of the therapy with respect to pretreatment values and control group. Anxiety was much more severe in female patients when compared to male subjects. Depression was seen at similar rates between men and women at the beginning of the therapy. Depression was decreased significantly in female patients after the end of therapy but not in male patients. Conclusion: Acne vulgaris causes depression and anxiety in female patients; however, it only causes anxiety in male patients.
