The frequency of onychomycosis in our dermatology clinic

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of the patients with onychomycosis who have admitted to our clinic. Materials and method: 771 patients aged 18 years and over presented to Dermatology Clinic of Meram Medical Faculty of Selçuk University between October 2004 - January 2005 were included into the study. Age, sex and education level of the patients were noted. Nail samples were taken for diagnosis in our laboratory. Direct microscopic examination and culture were performed. Chi-square test and student t test were used for statistical analysis. Results: Onychomycosis was detected in -67 cases 18.7%), of whom 43 (64.1%) were male and 24 (35.9%) were female. The presence of onychomycosis was found to correlate significantly with increasing age (p<0.05), male gender (p.<_0.05) and low education level (p<0.05). Conclusion: We detected the frequency of onychomycosis as 8.6% in our patients. We consider that occurancerate of onychomycosis may decrease in our region when informative educational measures related to with protection are performed.

Amaç: Polikiniğimizeze başvuran hastalarımızdaki onikomikoz sıklığını araştırmak. Yöntem ve gereçler: Çalışmaya Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi Dermatoloji polikliniğine Ekim 2004 - Ocak 2005 tarihleri arasında başvuran 18 yaş ve üzerindeki 771 hasta alındı. Olguların yaş, cinsiyet ve eğitim düzeyleri kaydedildi. Onikomikoz tanısı için tırnak numuneleri laboratuarımızda alındı. Her numunenin direkt mikroskopik muayenesi ve mantar kültürü yapıldı. Bulgular chi-square test ve student t testi ile değerlendirildi. Bulgular: 67 olguda (%8.7) onikomikoz saptadık. Bu olguların 43'u erkek (%64.1) ve 24'ü (%35.9) kadındı. Onikomikoz gelişiminin yaş artışı (p<0,05), erkek cinsiyeti (p<0,05) ve düşük eğitim düzeyi (p<0,05j ile korale olduğunu tespit ettik. Sonuç: Kliniğimize başvuran hastalar arasında onikomikoz sıklığını %8.6 olarak saptadık. Onikomikozdan korunma ve tedavi yöntemleri ile ilgili bilgilendirici eğitsel çalışmaların yapılması durumunda bölgemizde onikomikoz görülme oranlarının daha da düşeceğini düşünmekteyiz.
