The Archaeometric Research on the Pottery Finds from the Theater at Olba

Abstract

The archaeological and archaeometric study of the pottery finds discovered during the archaeological excavations at Olba are important for establishing a typology of ceramics at the site. This article evaluates pottery finds of the 2013 excavations at the theater of Olba. The color values of the samples coded and photographed were determined by chromametric analysis. Thin section optical microscope analyzes showed petrographic properties of the samples; The XRF analysis results revealed the element-based chemical structures of ceramics. According to the petrographical results, ceramics separated by 10 sub groups generally have firing temperatures ranging from 700-950°C. Based on the evidence obtained from the analysis of samples, possible similarities and differences were determined and comparisons were made with the information obtained from the previous archaeometric research of the material from Olba

Özet

Olba'da 2010 yılında başlayan ve halen devam eden arkeolojik kazılarda ele geçen seramik buluntuları kentin seramik tipolojisinin değerlendirilmesi bakımından önem kazanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Olba tiyatrosunda 2013 yılı kazı sezonunda yoğunluk gösteren ve arkeometrik yönden incelenen seramiklere ait elde edilen ilk sonuçlar değerlendirilmiştir. İlk olarak kodlanıp fotoğraflanan örneklerin renk değerleri kromametrik analiz ile belirlenmiştir. İnce kesit optik mikroskop analizleri örneklerin petrografik özelliklerini; XRF analiz sonuçları ise seramiklerin element temelli kimyasal yapılarını ortaya çıkarmıştır. Petrografik sonuçlara göre 10 gruba ayrılan seramikler genel olarak 700-950 °C arasında değişen pişirim sıcaklıklarına sahiptir. Gerçekleştirilen analizlerde elde edilen verilerle, hem de seramik örnek seti içindeki örnekler arasındaki muhtemel benzerlik ve farklıklar anlaşılmaya çalışılmış hem de Olba'da daha önce yapılan arkeometrik çalışmalarla karşılaştırma imkânı elde edilmiştir
