Abstract

Polis Byzantion possessed a fertile territory in its hinterland, but had diff iculty in cultivating it thanks to the ferocious Th racian tribes living on its borders. Th e emergence of the Odrysian Kingdom in Th race in 470’s BC and its expansion into Th race, at least for a certain period of time, restrained the neighboring tribes of Byzantion. It was precisely at this time that Byzantion took advantage of its fertile khora to its full extent, exporting grain to the other Greek poleis with the permission of the Athenians, as a decree of the Athenian Assembly in 426 BC ($IG\mathit\;\mathrm I.^3\;61$) concerning the grain export of Byzantion shows..
