A Hellenistic Grave Stele from Mersin Museum

Abstract

Th is study aims to evaluate a grave stele of unknown provenance, bought by the Mersin Museum. On the grave stele, there are four figures consisting of a male in Dioskurides Type with a male servant, furthermore a female in Nikokleia stance with a female servant. Th e iconography of the figures seem to be transferred to the grave stele from free standing sculptures. In the light of the stylistic and iconographic comparisons, and the general shape of the stele, it is revealed that many of the comparison examples have close similarities with the Smyrna steles. Th is grave stele, which has similar iconographic and stylistic features with the Smyrna stelai, known to have been produced extensively from the second quarter of the 2nd century BC, can be dated to to the 3rd quarter of the 2nd century BC. through its stylistic charactristica.

Özet

Bu çalışma Mersin Müzesi’ne satın alma yolu ile kazandırılmış ve buluntu yeri bilinmeyen bir mezar stelini değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Mezar steli üzerinde Dioskurides Tipi’nde bir erkek, Nikokleia duruşunda bir kadın ile, biri kız biri erkek olmak üzere iki hizmetliden oluşan dört figür yer almaktadır. Sahnedeki figürlerin ikonografisi, onların üç boyutlu heykellerden esinlenilerek mezar steline aktarılmış olduklarını göstermektedir. Yapılan stilistik ve ikonografik karşılaştırmalar ışığında ve ayrıca stelin genel biçimi değerlendirildiğinde, karşılaştırma örneklerinin birçoğunun Smyrna stelleri ile yakın benzerlikleri olduğu ortaya çıkmaktadır. MÖ 2. yüzyılın 2. çeyreğinden itibaren yoğun olarak üretildiği bilinen Smyrna stelleriyle benzer ikonografik ve stilistik özelliklere sahip bu mezar steli, stilistik özelliklerinden dolayı MÖ 2. yüzyılın 3. çeyreğine tarihlendirilmiştir.
