Abstract
Even if it comes with different variations, the expectation of a redeemer is very common in many religious traditions. Christianity and Judaism include different messianic typologies in terms of history and religious text. The understanding of messiah had undergone important changes in the apocalyptic period and literature. In this period the messiah was generally described as a mythological hero who is beyond human characteristics. Symbolical descriptions and mythological narrations are very common in the parts related to the redeemer. The belief in redeemer (Mahdi) has not been a focal point in the Islamic faith, because Muhammad is regarded as the last messenger. However, there are two types of expectation of a redeemer in Islamic tradition: the return of Jesus Christ and the coming of Mahdi. In this article I am going to compare the Islamic expectation of a redeemer with the apocalyptical tradition’s perception of a redeemer in terms of its personality, the period before and during his era, perception of time, as well as symbolical narrations.
