Abstract
Aim: Genetically modified foods are the form of modern biotechnology applied to food production. The ever-increasing use of these foods has brought them into greater prominence in terms of public health. In this study, it was aimed to examine the relevant studies and publications in the literature. Materials and Methods: The study examined the publications on the health effects of genetically modified foods published in the PubMed database between 2008 and 2017. 85 articles were obtained using predetermined keywords and 49 of them that met the criteria were included in the study. Findings: 49 articles were examined in the study. Of these publications from 16 different countries, 2 were observational (4.1%), 43 were experimental research (87.8%), 3 were review articles (6.1%) and 1 was case report (2.0%). Four studies were on humans. It was determined that the metabolic effects were most commonly emphasized ones among the health effects of genetically modified foods. CONCLUSION: Despite the limitations of the study, it reveals that the publications on this subject mostly cover animal experiments. For human health, it would be useful to approach the issue on the basis of the precautionary principle.
