Abstract
In this study, catch efficiencies of straight and kirbed hooks used for sportive hand line fishing were compared. Experiments were conducted around Urla islands in Izmir Bay where line fishing is intensive during March and August 2001. The same type of baits was used for comparison. During the study 260 fish belonging to 11 species were caught. It was found that 58% and 42% of the total catch were obtained from equal numbered kirbed and straight hooks, respectively. Total catch composition was consisted of 50% annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis), 19% bogue (Boops hoops), 17% picarel (Spicara smaris), 6% two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris), 2% common pandora (Pagellus erytrinus) and 6% non-commercial fish species. Statistically significant difference (P<0.05) between kirbed and straight hooks were found for each species mentioned above.
