Bioaccumulation of heavy metals by the brown alga Cystoseira sp. along the Aegean Sea.

Abstract

Brown algae Cystoseira sp. and to gain additional information on the environmental conditions of the area, seawater samples were collected from six sampling stations along the Aegean coast. Concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe were measured for both algae and seawater samples. The relative abundance of metals in Cystoseira sp. increase in the order Pb<Cd<Cu<Zn<Mn<Fe, whereas in the seawater the order was Pb<Cd<Cu<Mn<Zn<Fe. The heavy metal concentrations detected in algae showed significant differences among all studied stations. The data obtained from this study were also compared with those obtained from previous studies. Metal concentrations recorded at the sampling stations may be used for background levels for interspecific comparison within the Aegean area.

Özet

Bu çalışmada, Ege Denizi kıyılarında saptanan altı örnekleme noktasında kahverengi alglerden Cystoseira sp. ve çevre koşulları ile ilgili daha fazla bilgi edinmek amacıyla denizsuyu örnekleri de toplanmıştır. Toplanan örneklerde Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn ve Fe konsantrasyonları ölçülmüştür. Ağır metal konsantrasyon sıralaması Cystoseira sp. için Pb<Cd<Cu<Zn<Mn<Fe iken bu sıralama deniz suyu örneklerinde Pb<Cd<Cu<Mn<Zn<Fe şeklindedir. Cystoseira sp. için ölçülen metal konsantrasyonları tüm istasyonlarda belirgin farklılıklar göstermiştir. Bu çalışmada elde edilen sonuçlar daha önce yapılan çalışmalarla karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu çalışmada ölçülen ağır metal değerleri Ege Denizi kıyılarında yapılacak diğer çalışmalarda referans değerlerini oluşturacaktır.
