The Value Perception and the Values Hierarchy of Special Education Teachers

Abstract

Special education students are individuals with special needs. They are individuals who have problems adapting to their environment due to these needs. It is a known fact that the values of the individual are a significant factor in the individual's adaptation to the environment. Values become a part of an individual's personality by guiding the individual's behaviors. Beside the family, teachers also play an important role in acquiring values. This research was conducted within descriptive research to reveal the values hierarchy of special education teachers together with their reasons. It was attempted to find out the value perceptions of the special education teachers, their values, the reasons why they adopt these values, the values they want to teach their students and why they want to teach them. The study group of the research is comprised of 23 teachers in Giresun Special Education Secondary School affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the central district of Giresun Province. The participants of the research were specified according to the purpose sampling method. Descriptive research was used in the study. The findings were obtained via an interview form that consisted of semi-structured questions. The interview form was prepared by the researcher upon a literature review on the subject and getting the expert opinion. The descriptive analysis technique was used to analyze the data. The data were summarized and described under the themes of "social perspective" and "individual perspective". It was attempted to interpret and explain why teachers gave importance to certain values. The values the teachers wanted to teach students and their reasoning were determined and interpreted. Moreover, direct quotations were stated to reflect some striking examples of participants' ideas. The contributions of the research to the field come into prominence when it is assumed that the values of the special education teachers can make it easy or difficult for special education students to adapt to the society.

Özel eğitim öğrencileri, özel gereksinimleri olan bireylerdir. Bu gereksinimlerinden dolayı çevrelerine karşı uyum sorunu yaşamaktadırlar. Bireyin sahip olduğu değerler, bireyin çevreye uyum sağlamasında önemli bir etken olduğu bilinen bir gerçektir. Değerler bireyin davranışlarını yönlendirerek bireyin kişiliğinin bir parçası olmaktadır. Değerlerin kazanılmasında ailenin yanında öğretmenler de önemli bir rol oynamaktadırlar. Bu araştırma özel eğitim öğretmenlerinin değer algısını ve değerler hiyerarşisini nedenleri ile birlikte ortaya çıkarabilmek için betimsel tarama yöntemi ile yapılmıştır. Özel eğitim öğretmenlerinin değer algıları, hangi değerlere sahip oldukları, neden bu değerleri benimsedikleri, öğrencilerine hangi değerleri, hangi gerekçelerle öğretmek istedikleri tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, Giresun İli Merkez ilçede Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı’na bağlı olan Giresun Özel Eğitim Ortaokulu’ndaki 23 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın katılımcıları amaçlı örnekleme yöntemine göre belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada betimsel tarama yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular, yarı yapılandırılmış sorulardan oluşan görüşme formu ile elde edilmiştir. Görüşme formu, konu hakkında literatür taraması yapılıp uzman görüşü alınarak araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanmıştır. Verilerin çözümlenmesinde ise betimsel analiz tekniği kullanılmıştır. Veriler “toplumsal bakış” ve bireysel bakış” temaları altında özetlenip betimlenmiştir. Öğretmenlerin hangi değerlere neden önem verdikleri yorumlanarak açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Öğretmenlerin öğrencilere hangi değerleri öğretmek istedikleri nedenleri ile birlikte tespit edilip yorumlanmıştır. Ayrıca katılımcıların düşüncelerinden olan bazı çarpıcı örnekleri yansıtmak amacıyla doğrudan alıntılara yer verilmiştir. Özel eğitim öğretmenlerinin sahip olduğu değerlerin, özel eğitim öğrencilerinin topluma uyum sağlamasını kolaylaştırabileceği ya da zorlaştırabileceği düşünüldüğünde araştırmanın alana sağlayacağı katkılar ortaya çıkacaktır.
