A case of otogenic complication of widespread lateral sinus thrombosis and Bezold's abscess

Abstract

With the introduction of antibiotics, intracranial and extracranial complica¬tions of chronic otitis media have significantly reduced. Yet, mortality rate for lateral sinus thrombosis remains high. The authors present a case in which widespread dural venous thrombophlebitis of lateral sinus origin and Bezold's abscess were coexistent, together with a severe septic course re¬sulting from chronic otitis media. We obtained a favourable outcome from a combination of surgical and medical treatment.

Özet

Antibiyotiklerin kullanımı ile kronik otitis mediaya bağlı intrakranyal ve ekstrakranyal komplikasyonlarda önemli ölçüde azalma olmasına ragmen, lateral sinüs tr.omboflebitine bağlı mortalite oranı hala yüksektir. Bu çalış¬mada lateral sinüsten kaynaklanan yaygın dural venöz tromboflebit ve Be-zold apsesinin birlikte görüldüğü kronik otitis media olgusu sunulmuştur. Olguya cerrahi tedavi uygulanmıştır.
