Abstract
The goal of our study is to determine risk factors in patients with hip frac¬tures due to osteoporosis. The study included 22 women and six men who had undergone surgery because of hip fracture. Age and sex-matched 24 healthy women and four hearty men were included as the control group. Both groups were asked questions modified from MEDOS 88 questionnaire in order to obtain data as to their personal characteristics and medical and family his¬tories. Patients with poor cooperation and orientation were excluded. Values for mean age and height in the study and control groups were 71.64 and 75.17 years and 161.71 and 161.28 cm, respectively (p>0.05). Incidence of hip frac¬ture in women was four times as high as that in men. Calcium intake was higher in the control group (p<0.05). No significant differences were found with respect to other parameters. By organizing wider patient and control groups more definitive risk factors can be obtained.
