Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic methods and results of surgical treatment of patients with congenital head and neck masses. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively re-viewed a total of 51 patients diagnosed as having congenital head and neck masses between 1988 and 1998. Results: Diagnoses included thyroglossal duct cysts (n=28), branchial cysts (n=10), cystic hygro-mas (n=3), hemangiomas (n=3), dermoid cysts (n=2), teratomas (n=2), aberrant thyroid tissue (n=2), and hamartoma (n=1). Conclusion: Differential diagnosis of head and neck masses should include congenital anomalies be-cause some types show malignant transformation.
