Abstract
We retrospectively reviewed 34 patients with congenital hypothyroidism, who Were treated and followed by the department ofpediatric endocrinology between 1991 and 1995. Distribution of symptoms and clinical findings on admission was evaluated in relation to age. Mean age at the time of diagnosis was 14.79 months. Seven patients (20.5%) had a familial history of goiter and 10 patients(29.4%) were from first degree consanguineous marriages. The most frequent symptoms were delay in growth, a large tongue and a hoarse voice. The most common physical findings were a large tongue and a puffy face. Since most of the patients in the study group were diagnosed and treat¬ed late after the full development of clinical pictures, the importance of screening tests for neonatal hypothyroidism is emphasized.
