The relationship between allergy and thyroid functions

Abstract

Objectives: There are several studies suggesting that hyperthyroidism and severe asthma may coexist. We investigated the relationship between thyroid functions and allergy. Patients and Methods: A total of 106 patients were evaluated with regard to their allergy status, of whom 68 patients (mean age 48.1 ±12.7 years) were euthyroid, 28 patients (mean age 43.0±15.2years) were hyperthyroid, and 10 patients (mean age 47.7±10.8 years) were hypothyroid. T3, T4and TSH, and IgE levels and total eosinophil count were measured. Results: The levels of IgE in euthyroid, hyperthyroid and hypothyroid patients were 46.2±57.9 IU/ ml, 48.7±84.9 IU/ml and 35.9±37.3 lU/ml, respectively. There was no difference in eosinophil count. The correlation between IgE and T3, T4, and TSH were -0.1193, -0.1219, and -0.1855, respectively. IgE levels were 45.3±59.7 IU/ml, 40.6±55.3 IU/ml, and 93.9±93.5 IU/ml in patients with grade I, II and 111 goiters, respectively. Mean IgE levels of 25 euthyroid patients on levothyroxine were found lower than those who did not receive levothyroxine. No significant differences in IgE levels were found in patients receiving propylthiouracil, levothyroxine, or no therapy. Conclusion: Our results showed no relationship between thyroid functions and allergy.

Amaç: Hipertiroidizm ile şiddetli astımın birlikte olduğunu gösteren çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmada amacımız tiroid fonksiyonları ile allerji arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Ortalama yaşları 48.1±12.7 olan 68 ötiroid guatrlı, 43.0±15.2 olan 28 hipertiroid ve 47.7±10.8 olan 10 hipotiroid, toplam 106 hastayı allerjik zemin yönünden değerlendirdik. Tiroid fonksiyonlarının saptanması için T3, T4 ve TSH düzeyleri, allerji durumu için IgE düzeyleri ve total eozinofil sayısı ölçüldü. Bulgular: Ötiroid, hipertiroid ve hipotiroid hastalarda IgE düzeyleri sırasıyla 46.2±57.9 IU/ml, 48.7±84.9 IU/ml, 35.9±37.3 lU/ml olup eozinofil sayımı bakımından farklılık yoktu. IgE ile T3, T4 ve TSH arasındaki korelasyonlar sırasıyla -0.1193, -0.1219 ve -0.1855 idi. Tiroid büyüklüğü grade l, II ve III olan hastalarda ise IgE düzeyleri sırasıyla 45.3±59.7 IU/ml, 40.6±55.3 IU/ml ve 93.9±93.5 IU/ mi idi. Ötiroid guatrlı levotiron kullanan 25 hastanın ortalama IgE düzeyi levotiron kullanmayan 43 hastanın IgE düzeyinden daha düşük olsa da aralarında anlamlı farklılık yoktu. Hastaların propycil, levotiron kullanımı veya ilaç kullanmamaları IgE düzeylerinde anlamlı değişiklik yapmadı. Sonuç: Sonuçlarımız tiroid fonksiyonları ile allerji göstergeleri arasında ilişki ortaya koymamıştır.
