Microbiological investigation of the eye drops frequently used in the outpatient settings

Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated microbiologic contamination of eye drops frequently used in outpatient settings. Study Design: Nine topical ocular medications were studied in two groups, including antibiotics, cycloplegics, mydriatics, fluorescein, and topical anesthetics. In one group the lids of the bottles were closed tightly while in the second, they were placed unscrewed on the bottle tops. All the medications were applied to five different patients every day. Starting from the first day, cultures were obtained on blood agar and Sabuoraud agar media each week for six weeks. Results were evaluated using the chi-square test. Results: No growth of bacteria was detected in any of the medications during six weeks. No statistical difference was found between the two groups. Conclusion: As there was no bacterial growth for six weeks, we concluded that ocular medications can be safely used at least for one month in the outpatient clinics.

Amaç: Poliklinik ortamında sık kullanılan göz damlalarının mikrobiyel kontaminasyon yönünden araştırılması. Çalışma Planı: Antibiyotik, sikloplejik, midriyatik, floresein, lokal anestezik damla ve pomad formunda dokuz adet ilaç çalışma kapsamına alındı. Her ilacı içeren iki grup oluşturuldu. Birinci grupta ilaç kapakları sıkıca kapatılırken ikinci grupta tam kapatılmadan bırakıldı. Her iki ilaç grubu her gün beş farklı hastaya uygulandı. İlk açıldığı andan başlayarak altı hafta süreyle her hafta başında damla içinden alınan örnekler kanlı-agar ve Sabouraud besiyerine ekildi. Sonuçlar istatistiksel olarak ki-kare testiyle değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Altı hafta süresince alınan örneklerde her iki ilaç grubunda da üreme olmadı. İki grup arasında fark saptanmadı. Sonuç: Poliklinik şartlarında kullanılan oküler ilaçlarda altı hafta boyunca üreme saptanmaması bu ilaçların en az bir ay boyunca kullanılabileceğini düşündürmüştür.
