Evaluation of signal loss of neurohypophysis in T1-weighted sequences of magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract
The posterior lobe of the pituitary gland is observed as an hyperintense signal on T1-weighted sequences of magnetic resonance imaging. However, this bright signal may be absent in 10% of the normal population and in cases such as central diabetes insipidus, empty sella, sellar and suprasellar masses, and ectopic neurohypophysis. In this review, these conditions in which the hyperintense signal of the neurohypophysis is not observed are discussed with case illustrations and causes.

Hipofiz gland posterior lobu (nörohipofiz) manyetik rezonans görüntülemede T1 ağırlıklı sekanslarda hiperintens izlenir. Ancak, T1 ağırlıklı sekanslarda posterior lobun yüksek sinyali, normal nüfusun %10'unda, santral diabetes insipidus, empty sella, sellar ve suprasellar kitle varlığında ve ektopik yerleşimli nörohipofiz olgularında izlenmeyebilir. Bu derlemede, nörohipofize ait hiperintensite saptanmayan bu durumlar olgu örnekleri ve nedenleriyle ele alınmıştır.
