Serum retinol and Beta-carotene levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract

SERUM RETİNOL AND B-CAROTENE LEVELS IN PATIENTS WITH RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS In this study we aimed to investigate the serum levels of antioxidant vitamins retinol and beta-carotene in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Sixty seven rheumatoid arthritis and 20 osteoarthritis cases and 22 healthy controls were included in the study. Both clinical and laboratory parameters of disease activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis were determined and serum retinol and beta-carotene levels were measured in all groups.Results of the study showed that patients with rheumatoid arthritis serum beta-carotene levels were lower than the control group. Also it was seen that serum beta-karotene levels were lower in patients with high serum CRP levels. Another point that we found was the inverse relationship between the Ritchie articular index and serum retinol levels. But we didn't find any relationship between serum antioxidant vitamin levels and erylhrocyte sedimentation rate, presence of rheumatoid factor and Steinbrocker's functional classification.

Özet

Bu çalışma romatoid artritli hastalarda antioksidan vitaminlerden retinal ve beta karatenin serum düzeylerini araştırmak amacı ile planlandı. Çalışmaya 67 romatoid artritli ve 20 osteoartrozlu hasta ile 22 sağlıklı kontrol alındı. Romatoid artritli hastaların klinik ve laboratuvar hastalık aktivite kriterleri belirlendi; tüm hasta ve kontrol gruplarının serum retinol ve beta-karoten düzeyleri ölçüldü. Çalışmanın sonunda romatoid artritli hastalarda serum beta-karoten düzeyleri kontrol grubuna oranla düşük bulundu. Yine, CRP düzeyi yüksek tesbit edilen hasta grubunda beta-karoten düzeylerinin düşük olduğu izlendi. Ayrıca klinik aktivite kriteri olan Ritchie artiküler indeks ile serum retinol düzeyi arasında negatif ilişki tesbit edildi. Buna karşın, antioksidan vitamin düzeyleri ile sedimentasyon hızı, romatoid faktör pozitifliği ve Steinbrocker evreleri arasında bir ilişki bulunamadı.
