Entrapment neuropathies of the wrist in hypothyroidism

Abstract

ENTRAPMENT NEUROPATHIES OF THE WRIST IN HYPOTHYROIDISM This study is designed to find out the frequency of entrapment neuropathies in carpal and ulnar tunnels in primary hypothyroidism and to determine whether the entrapment would improve with thyroid replacement therapy or not. 35 patients with primary hypothyrodism were evaluated clinically and electrophysiologically regarding the existence of carpal (CTS) and ulnar (UTS) tunnel syndromes. Our data showed that the frequency of CTS was 68. 6 % and, that of UTS was 54.3 % in this patient group. The assessment of 20 patients who had reached the euthyroid stage after thyroid hormone replacement therapy showed that 52 % of the hands having CTS and 67 % of the hands having UTS completely recovered after the therapy.

Özet

Bu çalışma, primer hipotiroidili hastalarda el bileğinde karpal ve ulnar tünelde gelişen sıkışma noropatilerinin sıklığını saptamak ve belirlenen sıkışma nöpotilerinin tiroid replasman tedavisi ile gerileyip gerilemediğini gözlemek amacıyla planlanmıştır. 35 pri ner hipotiroidili hasta klinik ve elektrofizyolojik olarak karpal tünel sendromu (KTS) ve ulnar tünel sendromu (UTS) yönünden değerlendirilmiştir. Hastaların % 68.6'sında KTS, % 54.3'ünde UTS olduğu saptanmıştır. Tiroid hormon replasman tedavisi ile ötiroid hale geçen 20 hasta tekrar değerlendirildiğinde, tedaviden önce KTS saptanan ellerin % 52'sinin, UTS saptanan ellerin ise % 67'sinin hormon tedavisi ile tamamen düzeldikleri saptanmıştır.
