Abstract

SENSORY, MOTOR AND FUNCTIONAL EVALUATION OF THE HEMIPLEGIC HAND Somatosensory loss following stroke is common and has adverse effect on functional outcome. The type and degree of sentory loss varies and is usualy incomplete, Pain, temperature and touch detection may be impaired. More commonly, marked deficits occur in discrimination and interpretation of sensory experiences such as passive movement recognition and steriognosis. The relation between superficial, proprioceptive, discriminative sensation, motor performance and dexterity of the hemiplegic hand is studied in a group of 22 patients. Motor performance tests were highly correlated with the dexterity test. The two sensory tests that correlated most highly with dexterity were two-point discrimination and steriognosis.
