Abstract
The prevalence and severity of osteoporosis in patients with early and late ankylosing spondylitis (AS) was assessed in 38 consecutive AS patients with an age range of 21 to 72 years (mean 45.0). The patients were grouped according to the stage of AS depending on the radiological evidence of spinal involvement. Quantitative Ultrasonography (QUS) was used to assess the skeletal status. The statistical analysis of measurements showed no significant difference in the percentage of osteopenia between two study groups (p>0.5). The results of our study have shown that the prevalence of osteopenia in early AS patients are similar to that in late disease. QUS was found to be an easy and effective method for assessment of bone status in AS.
