Evaluating of the use of folic acid by the pregnant women and their level of knowledge related to folic acid

Abstract
Introduction:Inadequate consumption offolic acid is the most common cause offolic acid deficiency. Iffolic acid deficiency occurs during pregnancy there is a risk of conjenilal disorders, especially neural tube defect. For this reason, there is a need offolic acid before & during pregnancy. Tlie World Health Organization recommends all of the women ofchildbearing age to take 0.4 mg of folic acid a day. Materials and methods: This study was conducted with 161 pregnant women registered by Denizli Province Public Health Clinic Number 4. The research data were collected by a face-to-face interviews. The survey consists of two parts, one of which is about the pregnant women's sociodemographic characteristics and the other which includes their usage and knowledge on folic acid. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 11.0 packet program. By means of the research the level of knowledge about the use offolic acid in the region is determined,which the aim to carry out the necessary educational studies. Findings: The mean age of the pregnant women was 25.3±4.3 years. Of the women who participated in the study 73.3% had a planned pregnancy. 16.1% womens before pregnancy had taken vitamin and mineral supplements. Only 11.8% were takingfolic acid during their pregnancy. It was also found that 23.0% of the women knew what folic acid was, 17.4% knew which foods contained folic acid, and 11.8% were able to stale that folic acid prevented neural tube defects. Results: It's found that the pregnant women who participated in the study had ineduquate knowledge about folic acid, its use and awareness. There is a need for adequate educational studies must be made on this subject to ensure that women ofchildbearing age consume adequate folic acid. Especially, individuals who work in the primary care should inform women of childhearing age on nutrition and folic acid consumption.

Giriş:Yetersiz folik alımı, folik asil eksikliğinin en sık nedenidir. Eğer folik asit eksikliği gebelik döneminde meydana gelirse bebekte nöral tüp defekti (NTD) basta olmak üzere konjenilal bozukluklara yol açma riski vardır. Bu nedenle gebelik öncesi dönemde ve gebelikle folik asit bir ihtiyaçtır. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (DSÖ) de tüm doğurgan çağdaki kadınların günde 0.4 mgr. folik asit alımını önermiştir. Gereç ve yöntem:Bu çalışma Denizli ili 4 nolu Sağlık Ocağı'na kayıtlı 161 gebe üzerinde yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri yüz yüze görüşme ile toplanmıştır. Anket formu gebelerin sosyo demografik özelliklerine ilişkin sorular ile folik asil kullanımı ve bilgiye yönelik sorular olmak üzere iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. Veriler, SPSS 11.0 paket programında analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma ile bölgedeki folik asit kullanımı ile ilgili bilgi düzeyleri belirlenerek, gerekli eğitim çalışmalarınınyürütülmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bulgular: Gebelerin yaş ortalaması 25.3±4.3'dür. Çalışmaya katılanların %73.3'ünün gebeliği planlıdır. Kadınların %16.1'i gebelik öncesi mineral ve vitamin desteği almıştır. Gebelik döneminde folik asit kullananların oranı %11.8'dir. Folik asidin ne olduğunu bilenler %23.0, folik asidin hangi besinlerde olduğunu bilenler %17.4, folik asitin nöral tüp defektini engellediğini belirtenler ise %11.8 olarak saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Sonuç olarak çalışmamıza katılan gebelerin folik asit ile ilgili bilgileri, kullanımı ve farkındalıklarıyetersiz bulunmuştur. Bu konuda yeterli eğitim çalışmaları ile, doğurgan çağdaki kadınların yeterli folik alımı sağlanmalıdır. Özellikle bilinci basamak sağlık hizmeti sunan kişiler, beslenme ve folik asit alımına ilişkin konularda, doğurgan çağdaki kadınları yeterince bilgilendirmelidir.
