Abstract
Hemodialysis (HD) is a new life event for patients. Also, HD patients receive treatments on a regular basis for the rest of their lives or until they receive a successful kidney transplant. What is also striking is the physically demanding, rigorous nature of the HD treatment regimen and the psychologically stressful nature of the procedure. Among the most commonly identifiable stressors ofHD patients are diet and fluid restrictions, a variety of medication side effects, uncertainty about survival, changes in family role and responsibilities, dependencies on medical technology, time lost for length of treatment, sexual disfunction, economic burdens, job loss, fatigue, andstaff Providing care for the HD patient requires a health care team capable of assessing various stressors experienced by the patients and the coping responses used by individual patients. The identification of treatment related stressors and coping strategies of HD patient provides usefid information for planning individualized patient teaching and counseling. The role of the health care professional is to prevent or reduce the stressor, and encourage and. where possible, enable patients to accept responsibility for their health and well-being and to fulfill their obligations within the family and society. However, the psychological consequences of living with a HD are often misinterpreted or ignored by healthcare professionals. Therefore, support for the patients in coping with the stressful changes caused by a chronic illness should be an integral part of health care.
