Abstract

This study was carried out with the aim of determining the individuals being within the limits of hypertension through the bload-pressure checks done in a village of Sakarya province of Turkey, and directing them for the advanced examinations and treatments. Following the written permission obtained from Sakarya Provincial Health Directorate, the study was carried out in two separate days within the dates 10 June 20 June 2004 in a village determined by random selection method. The blood-pressure checks were publicly announced one week beforehand through notification and posters. The people consenting to participate in the study were requested to come to the primary school of the village in the determined date and time. One hundred and thirty five people voluntarily participated in the study. The blood-pressures of the Individuals were measured by the researchers in accordance with the blood-pressure measurement technique. Following the measurements, research data was collected through the 26-question survey forms developed by the researchers and applied to the individuals by means of the face-to-face interview method. The statistical evaluation of the data collected through the study was carried out in computer, and chi-square and percentage calculation were used. Sixty-three percent of the participants were women, 37% were men, and the average age was 53.4. it was determined that 50.4 % of the participating Individuals were primary school graduates, 73.3 % had been born in a village, and 82.2 % were not working in a job. Of the study group, 68.9 % had health security and 34.8 % stated having a chronic disease. Of all the participants, 67.4% stated that there weren't any blood-pressure patients in their family. It was determined that, 35.6 % of the study group stated that they had never had their blood-pressure measured before and 83 % didn't have a sphygmomanometer in their home. Of the 135 individuals participating in the study, the blood-pressures of the 46 (34.8 %) were determined to be higher than 140/90 mmHg, which is the limit for hypertension. 29 (21.5 %) of these individuals stated that they had known their high blood-pressure problem, while the other 17 (13.0 %) individuals determined to be in the hypertension limits stated that they hadn't known their high blood-pressure problem and had never had their blood-pressure measured before. The individuals whose blood-pressures were within the limits of hypertension were given the due consultancy service and directed to go to a health institution. Consequently, the checks for the high blood-pressure values in an individual or societal basis can both prevent the premature deaths depending on hypertension and decrease the incidences of the hearth attack, hearth failure and paralysis, which cause considerable problems in terms of social health. It is vitally important to heighten the social awareness for and conduct a fight against hypertension.
