Mucositis Management in Cancer Patients With Chemotherapy

Abstract

The aim of the treatment of cancer is to destroy cancer cells and pre- vent the growth and development of cancer cells. However, during the treatment period, healthy cells in addition to cancer cells cau- se the destruction. For example, the rapid division of the epithelial cells of the oral mucosa by blocking the growth of the secretion of the oral mucosa flora causes. When the oral mucosa is damaged, the cells of the oral epithelium are weakened, edema, erythema, ble- eding and ulcerations occur. Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. These effects due to oral mucositis may negatively affect the patient, reducing the dose of the treatment taken by the patient, or skipping the dose. For this reason, the management of oral mucositis seen in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy is important for patients. Effective management of oral mucositis can be done by continuing nursing care during cancer treatment. Care practices for the management of oral mucositis of Oncology nurses should be aware that the current and evidence-ba- sed practices. The study was carried out to explain the current and evidence-based practices applied in oral mucositis management.

Özet

Kanserin tedavisinde amaç; kanserli hücreleri yok etmek, çoğalma- sını ve gelişmesini önlemektir. Fakat tedavi süresince kanserli hücre- lerin yanında sağlıklı hücrelerin de yok olmasına neden olmaktadır. Oral mukoza bozulduğunda, oral epitelyum hücrelerinde zayıflama, ödem, eritem, kanama ve ülserasyonlar görülmektedir. Kemoterapi tedavisi nedeniyle oluşan mukozitler kanser hastalarında konuşma güçlüğüne, beslenme bozukluğuna, ses kısıklığına, çiğneme ve yut- ma güçlüğüne neden olmaktadır. Oral mukozit nedeniyle görülen bu etkiler hastayı olumsuz yönde etkilerken, hastanın aldığı tedavi dozunun azaltılmasına veya dozun atlanmasına sebep olabilir. Bu nedenle kemoterapi alan kanser hastalarında görülen oral mukozi- tin yönetimi hastalar için önemlidir. Oral mukozitin etkili yönetimi hemşirelik bakımının kanser tedavisi süresince devam etmesiyle ya- pılabilir. Onkoloji hemşirelerinin oral mukozitin yönetimi için uygu- lanacak bakım uygulamalarının güncel ve kanıta dayalı olduğuna dikkat etmelidir. Derleme, oral mukozit yönetiminde uygulanan gün- cel ve kanıta dayalı uygulamaları açıklamak amacıyla yazılmıştır.
